Buying a Luxury Watch Online Safely: 7 Rules from a Dealer
The internet has democratized access to grail watches — and to grail scams. Here is how to buy safely.
Buying a $30,000 watch from someone you have never met used to be unthinkable. Today it is routine — but only if you follow a few non-negotiable rules.
1. Verify the dealer, not just the watch
Search the seller's business name plus 'review' and 'scam'. Check how long their domain has been registered. A legitimate dealer has a paper trail going back years.
2. Insist on high-resolution photography
Ask for unedited photos of the case back, between the lugs, the rehaut engraving, and the movement (if applicable). A reputable dealer will send these within hours.
3. Use a wire — but to a verified business account
Wire transfers are standard in this market. The catch: the receiving account must be a registered business in the dealer's legal name. Never wire to a personal account.
4. Demand a written return policy
Five business days, no-questions-asked, is the industry standard for high-value watches. Get it in writing before you send funds.
5. Insure the inbound shipment
The seller insures the shipment to you, but confirm the policy and carrier. Brink's, Malca-Amit, and FedEx Custom Critical are the trusted names.
6. Inspect on arrival — in front of the camera
Film yourself opening the package. This single 60-second video has resolved more disputes than any contract.
7. When in doubt, walk away
If anything feels off — pressure to wire quickly, refusal to send extra photos, prices that seem too good — walk. The watch you want will come around again.
